Его система из пяти или семи видов пауз в декламации Ḳur'ān (1. lāzim = m, 2. muṭlaḳ = ṭ, 3. djā'iz = dj, 4. mudjawwaz li-wadjh in = z, 5. murakhkhaṣ (ḍarūrat an = ḍ и 6.

al-Sad̲j̲āwandī (416 words), Abū ʿAbd Allāh (Abu ’l-Faḍl, Abū Ḏj̲aʿfar) Muḥammad (Aḥmad) b. Abī Yazīd Ṭayfūr al-Sad̲j̲āwandī al-G̲h̲aznawī al-Muḳriʾ al-Mufassir al-Naḥwī al-Lug̲h̲awī, an innovative Ḳurʾān reader and philologist, died 560/1165 (?)

He lived and worked in Sad̲j̲/g/kāwand, a small ¶ village half-way to the east of the route from Kābul to G̲h̲aznī in the vicinity of Sayyidābād, dominated by a high-lying citadel, now in ruins, called Tak̲h̲t-i or S̲h̲ār-i (S̲h̲ahr-i) Ḏj̲ams̲h̲īd. On the foot of this mount is placed the mausoleum of Ḵh̲wād̲j̲a Aḥmad (Muḥammad). Here, even today, the S̲h̲ayk̲h̲ is revered as a great and popular Ḳurʾān reader. His system of five, or seven, kinds of pauses in recitation of the Ḳurʾān (1. lāzim = m, 2. muṭlaḳ = ṭ , 3. d̲j̲āʾiz = d̲j̲ , 4. mud̲j̲awwaz li-wad̲j̲h in = z, 5. murak̲h̲k̲h̲aṣ (ḍarūrat an = ḍ , and 6. ḳad ḳīla = ḳ , 7. lā = l) has found broad acceptance not only in the East but it is also substantially adopted in the official Cairo edition of the Ḳurʾān (Gesch . des Qor ., iii, 236-7).

The manuscripts of his K. al-Wuḳūf or al-Waḳf or al-Waḳf wa ’l-ibtidāʾ are numerous. These are differentiated into: (a) a complete or «greater» book, (b) a brief or «shorter» book, often commented and glossed by others, and (c) compendia on this topic by later compilers who follow al-Sad̲j̲āwandī’s system, also in verses (Garrett 2067, 1). The «greater» as well as the «shorter» waḳf book should have originated from his K. ʿAyn al-tafsīr, which has not been discovered until today. According to the somewhat younger Ibn al-Ḳifṭī [q.v.] (Inbāh, iii, 153), al-Sad̲j̲āwandī in this commentary on the Ḳurʾān treated also kirāʾāt, naḥw, lug̲h̲a, s̲h̲awāhid, etc. His son Abū Naṣr (Abū Ḏj̲aʿfar ?) Aḥmad—father and son are sometimes confused— excerpted and presumably modified his father’s work under the title K. Insān al-ʿayn . Under several other titles attributed to the father dealing with specific themes seem to be hidden other excerpts and adaptations of his main work, for example on syntax and etymology, on strange words and morphology (e.g. Mas̲h̲had, Gawhar S̲h̲ād, iii [1367/1988], 1617 no. 1161).
